Supporting Classic Marine Engines Back to Life

Engine rebuilds can feel overwhelming.
They often begin with worry, uncertainty and the fear that something expensive or irreversible has happened.

Our goal is simple: to support owners through the rebuild process with calm advice, reliable parts and practical guidance based on real experience.

You are never alone in the process. If you are unsure, stuck or simply want a second opinion, we are always happy to help.

Volvo Penta MD2B, 2025 Rebuild

This MD2B presented with:

  • Difficult starting

  • Lingering black smoke

  • Previous seizure on cylinder 2

  • Poor idle stability

At first glance, it seemed like the engine was nearing the end of its life.

However, inspection revealed:

  • Strong crankshaft

  • Clean journals

  • No metal contamination in the oil

  • Solid lower-end condition

The head and valves on cylinder 2 were in poor condition, and the cylinder setup required careful evaluation.

Assessment & Parts Supplied

  • New cylinder jackets be installed

  • A replacement head be fitted

  • New piston rings be correctly matched to bore size

Breaking the engine in (the first run/starting procedure)

The table below shows the recommend RPM and time intervals for starting the engine for the first time to ensure optimal performance.

After the rebuild and the first starting procedure the engine returned to smooth idle and clean running performance. Another classic saved.

Why These Engines Are Worth Rebuilding

Engines like the MD2B were built with heavy castings, strong crankshafts and simple mechanical design.

They are often described as “tractor engines” for a reason.

When rebuilt properly using correct measurements and quality components, they can run reliably for decades.

Many owners fear the worst when smoke or starting issues appear.
In reality, these engines are often far stronger than expected.
